The final piece of my liveset during the “Off-Key Session: Sound Architects” at the St John the Baptist Church in Bristol, November 10th 2012 - an improvisation using samples of various Acoustic Tales whilst looping myself on the violin. Sadly the loop engine didn’t allow to isolate the single violin tracks to rebuild the track exactly as it was played live but I hope that you enjoy the atmosphere anyway. The original live recording can be streamed as part of this wonderful abstract kindly provided by Fluid Radio (recorded at a seat amidst the audience): http://soundcloud.com/fluid-radio/sound-architects

The second Off-Key Session curated by the lovely Fluid Radio/Fluid Audio will take place at the 14th century church of St John The Baptist church (Broad Street, Bristol, BS1 2EZ) on Saturday, November 10th, 6pm - 10pm.
After having presented my first ever live concert with my chamber music project earlier this year in the St John The Baptist Crypt during the first Off-Key Session I’m very happy to return to Bristol to play my first ever live concert as Field Rotation. I’m truly grateful for being invited to debut in a line-up with Simon Scott, Peter Jorgensen, Antonymes and the Tape Loop Orchestra.
Tickets are now available through Fluid Audio.
See you there!

Zeitreise Remix EP

I think it’s time to give you some further information on the Zeitreise Remix EP. Roughly a dozen musicians submitted their ideas so far which is a great basis for the next steps of the EP indeed. Thanks a lot so far!

You can be sure that it’s quite a challenge to select submissions that will make it to the final EP release as I once thought about a limit of 2-3 Remixes max. However, I’m still struggling with the final decision a bit.

At some point I decided to invite some musicians in addition to the public contest. As soon as all the contributions are in it will come to the mastering process. As it’s a collection of mixes that sound really different this will possibly be the most challenging part of the EP.

ARTWORK CONTEST

Also I decided to add another contest thingy, but now regarding the artwork. I’m now going to collect submissions for the cover artwork. Since the EP is planned to be released under the Creative Commons licence the artwork will be likewise, with full credits of course. I think that I’ll be adding a digital booklet with a collection of the best artwork submissions. Just to remind you of the theme: the EP is called ‘Zeitreise’ (German for ‘time travel’). Submissions should have a reasonable resolution and have to be sent to info[at]fieldrotation[dot]de until Sept. 27th. (that’s two weeks from now - sounds fair, doesn’t it?)

Stay tuned.

This seems to be Field Rotation’s first appearance on BBC Radio. I’m really honoured that Stephen McCauley showed some serious interest in my work after he stumbled upon my music through Soundcloud. Last Friday he featured the alternate version of ‘Acoustic Tale 2’ in his weekly guide on BBC Radio Ulster (stream should be available for a week after 31/08/2012 - the Acoustic Tale is presented roughly after half an hour). During this show he already signalized to possibly broadcast other works of mine in forthcoming weekly guides. So stay tuned!

Being part of the film score of the documentary ‘Neun Monate Winter’ (nine month winter), Field Rotation receives the first imdb entry. The documentary about the production of a play for Staatstheater Wiesbaden is an intensive and unvarnished but likewise art- and colorful insight into the work behind the scenes at a theater. Director of ‘Neun Monate Winter’ is Sven Sauer.
My piece ‘Zeitreise’ is featured amongst artists like Nils Frahm, Parachutes, Rena Jones, Pleq, Balmorhea, The North Sea and Rameses III et al.
The DVD has been released May 2012.

My recordings of the Acoustic Tales project teached me a lesson in being careful with doing backups of my work frequently. This rough sketch of ‘Acoustic Tale 2’ has been my first attempt to start working on the Acoustic Tales. A hard drive crash ungently interrupted my recordings and I lost the first two tales that had been nearly finished at that time. Nevertheless they were - at least in my opinion - worth it to get a proper rearrangement. So I restarted the recordings from zero, but slightly modified for sure. Luckily my brother recently rediscovered this first sketch that I sent him before the crash back in early 2009. The arrangement is quite different from the final version of ‘Acoustic Tale 2’ but you might recognize it anyway.

It’s been quite a while since I shared some new sounds. Here I’m recording a current project on tape to add some analog warmth to this loop-based Field Rotation composition (that maybe will find its place on a future release some day). The video has been filmed with some really poor portable device that by the way also caught the rendering through the built-in speakers of the reel to reel tape recorder plus some daily field recordings from outside as I just opened the window during the recording transfer on tape.

Due to its resolution I don’t recommend to watch this film in fullscreen mode. Anyway, enjoy this small insight into my work…
